Egypt reports 1,557 new COVID-19 cases, 81 new fatalities

Cabinet has, from Saturday, started easing movement restrictions for citizens, night-time curfew lifted

The Ministry of Health reported, on Tuesday, 1,557 new coronavirus (COVID-19) cases and 81 new fatalities. The latest figures raise the country’s total number of infections to 68,311 and 2,953 fatalities.

The ministry also reported that a total of 18,460 cases have recovered and been discharged from quarantine facilities in hospitals.

The government has, since Saturday, started easing restrictions that were put in place to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). These included lifting the nationwide night-time curfew, which was first imposed on 25 March, as well as suspending international flights at all airports across Egypt and commercial shop closures.

Despite the curfew’s lifting, face masks remain obligatory in public, with violators fined between EGP 300 and EGP 5,000. Certain precautionary measures, such as the wearing of face masks in public and social distancing, remain in effect amid fears of a second wave of infections.

Restaurants, coffee shops, sports clubs, cinemas, theatres, and some cultural and social venues also opened their doors to visitors on Saturday. These venues will only be allowed to operate at a maximum capacity of 25% and precautionary measures still in place, with health and safety a priority.
