Some people in Egypt have called on China to pay compensation for being the zero point of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, spokesperson for China’s embassy in Cairo said. He added that these calls are “silly and ironic.”

The so-called China compensation claims are promoted by attention seekers and will not impact the deep friendship between both countries, the spokesperson added.

He said that China and Egypt can quickly overcome the coronavirus pandemic and contribute to safeguarding the world’s public health.

“We have noticed that some anti-China powers in the international community recently claimed that China should bear responsibility for the outbreak of the coronavirus, and demanded compensation from China. A few people from Egypt also made similar false accusations,” the spokesperson said.

The United Nations (UN) and the World Health Organization (WHO) have said that no country should be stigmatised by the virus. They expressed appreciation for China’s contributions in combating this global epidemic, the spokesperson added.

China was the first country to report the outbreak of the new coronavirus to the WHO, yet some groups have misled public opinion by fabricating and promoting rumours. These rumours only serve to undermine international cooperation and weaken global confidence in the fight against the coronavirus, he continued.

“Any attempt to discredit China and harm its interests will never succeed. The Egyptian-Chinese relations are deeply rooted. Both governments and peoples are cooperating against COVID-19,” the spokesperson said.
