Syrian foreign minister Walid Al-Muallem arrived in Tehran on an unannounced visit on Sunday, where he met with Iranian foreign minister Ali Akbar Salehi before they both spoke in a joint press conference.

“We believe that all the anti-Syrian forces have gathered in Aleppo to fight the government… and they will definitely be defeated.” Al-Muallem told reporters in the press conference, referring to the ongoing battle between the Syrian forces and the opposition in Syria’s biggest commercial hub, Aleppo.

Al-Maellem described the talks held between him and Salehi regarding their countries’ joint statements on pressing issues in the region as “fruitful”.

The visit comes as heaving fighting in Aleppo reached its second day, with reports of clashes taking place in the neighbourhoods of Bab al-Hadeed, al-Zahraa and al-Arqoub, which were reported by the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Another Syrian government member, Deputy Prime Minister Omar Ghalawanji , met with Tehran officials on Wednesday. Ghalawanji met with Iranian officials in order to discuss economic relations between both countries, according to AFP.
